Wisdom Teeth Extraction

When is Wisdom Tooth Removal Necessary?

The wisdom teeth are additional molars that typically grow in, in the back of a person’s mouth. When they begin to grow in, a person can feel an immense amount of pain while others may not feel any pain. Wisdom teeth are typically assessed by a dentist at a regular checkup from X-rays or exams.

The removal of the wisdom teeth is not always necessary, it is always best to visit the dentist so that they can properly take a look at the teeth and how they are growing in alongside the other teeth. It’s hard to know when the wisdom teeth need to be removed because each person’s situation is different.

When should wisdom teeth be removed?

Pain

If a person is experiencing pain from their wisdom teeth growing in then it is important to first get to the dentist. A dentist can assess whether or not the pain is directly related to the wisdom teeth or if it related to something else. Severe pain in the back of the mouth may, however, be related to wisdom teeth growing in. If a person is experiencing unbearable pain and if the dentist is able to see that it is due to wisdom teeth then it may be necessary for them to be removed. In these cases, removal of the wisdom teeth may be the only way to relieve a person of their pain.

Cysts or infections

Often, the wisdom teeth don’t fit within the mouth. This is the primary reason why removing the wisdom teeth is necessary. In this case, the wisdom teeth may remain hidden beneath the gums because there is not physically room for them to fit normally. They may be trapped within the jaw which can cause an array of problems including infections in or around the area as well as cysts. Both infections and cysts can cause damage to the roots of certain teeth as well as affect bone support.

Crowding

Wisdom teeth often cause crowding in the mouth because there may not be enough room for them among the many other teeth that they have. The wisdom teeth may force other teeth around causing discomfort or uneven teeth. Crowding can cause damage to the other teeth such as erosion or even pain from the pressure of force against the existing teeth. A dentist will likely advise that the wisdom teeth be removed if crowding is severe.

Conclusion

Dentists often recommend that people have their wisdom teeth removed at a younger age. It is best to do this because it stops the growth of bone formation and structure. The roots are also not as heavily set so there is less pain at a younger age. A wisdom tooth removal may be necessary for a variety of reasons, knowing when it’s time to have them removed can be beneficial to a person experiencing pain or discomfort from them.
