The first step entails preparing the tooth that will get the porcelain veneers. If there is tooth decay, the dentist will first trim that side of the tooth. The trimming process is necessary to reduce the size of the tooth and allow the correct placement of the veneers.
Tooth trimming may also require removing old fillings. Most professionals prefer to change fillings before the procedure to ensure a good bond. Although the level of trimming depends on the condition, regular trimming falls between 0.5 to 0.7 millimeters.
A sedative is usually not required unless the veneers will extend beyond the gum line. The gum line is sensitive and patients might experience discomfort without local anesthetic. Patients who have dental anxiety can talk to the dentist about sedation options.
The dentist will select the color of the veneer based on the color of the existing teeth. They will also decide which part of the laminate needs more translucency to ensure the result looks real and natural.
After trimming the teeth and cleaning the oral cavity, the dentist will proceed to take an impression of the tooth (or teeth), the gums and nearby teeth. The impression allows the dentist to produce a dental veneer that fits perfectly over the affected tooth. The process entails putting a thick moldable material on the teeth and having the patient bite on it to form the impression. Some dentists have special cameras for digital impressions.
It takes about one to two weeks to complete the production of dental veneers. During this time, the dentist may apply a temporary veneer on the teeth. After the new veneer is ready, the dentist will examine its fit. This is necessary, because slight errors may cause issues with tooth alignment. Any necessary adjustments will be made until the veneer fits correctly.
Once the dentist is satisfied with the color, shape and appearance of the veneer, they will bond it to the tooth. They will polish the surface of the tooth and veneer properly before starting the bonding process. Afterward, they will etch the tooth’s surface with an acid gel to ensure a tight bond. The dentist will place a bonding agent and harden the veneer onto the tooth with a special blue light.
